What You Need Right Now

If you are not where you want to be right now in your life, there is one thing that can change that.

It is this: take one or two steps toward your goal right now with support.

So many people are stuck planning and thinking about their big goals that they paralyze themselves. You think you need to take big actions to get toward your goal but you actually a few steps.

How I used this in practice was when I was in med school.

It was always my dream to be a doctor! Oh how they run in the halls of the ER! There’s a glorious glow on some of the people like they show in TV.

In my first year, I was struck with the reality that this was going to be hard. There’s a lot of studying to do. All the teachers are always saying it is lifelong learning. At least 5-10 years of school and training.

Damn.

Since this is my dream, I went through the first few months of learning, but the teaching was like drinking from a fire hose. When asking a few seniors about med school, the answer is always: it’s really hard, so keep studying.

Every day, taking a few steps toward my goal, study, and learn.

There was an unexpected source of motivation: my other classmates

THEY ALSO STRUGGLED LIKE ME!

I was not alone in this hard journey. Some excelled more than I did, while others performed lower.

We all took a few steps forward. A few fell by the wayside. Some failed. Some quit.

What I did to make the big goal seem bearable was to break down the steps to pass. Break down the subjects and study in chunks. Segregate the chapters of a book into small parts throughout the week so it is not so daunting.

So if you have a big goal, something that is above your level, then you need to look at the big picture and start to take a few steps, and don’t be afraid to ask for help especially those who are a few steps ahead of you.

One thing that is more powerful than this is if you have some help from someone who was completed or done your goal or is actually doing it. You’ll more insight from this. Find a mentor.

This is how I learned to freedive. Maybe for another time. But for now…

Go. If you found this helpful, do it. It might change your life.
