Work is an important part of our lives, but it’s not everything.
I love to work. Not everybody can say that. But my life does not revolve around work, nor should yours.
Apart from work, I am still able to find time to play with my kids, write a thousand words (the current goal is daily, but not yet there), work on other skills (like soft skills or join a short course), and plan out time with my wife and family.
We all need time to relax, spend time with loved ones, and pursue our own interests. But sometimes, it can be hard to find a balance between work and life.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by work or like you’re not getting enough out of your job, there are things you can do to make your workplace more enjoyable and still have a life outside of work.
Here are my five tips:
Set boundaries.
It’s important to set boundaries between your work life and your personal life. This means not checking work email or answering work calls after hours. It also means taking breaks during the day and taking time off when you need it.
Be intentional with setting boundaries with work/life because other people in your life might be working hard to make time for you, but you are not doing your part.
Find a job you’re passionate about.
If you’re not passionate about your job, it’s going to be hard to find joy in it. When you’re passionate about your work, it’s easier to stay motivated and engaged.
Create a positive work environment.
Your work environment has a big impact on your happiness at work. If you’re surrounded by negative people or a hostile work environment, it’s going to be hard to stay positive and motivated. Try to create a positive work environment by being friendly and supportive to your colleagues.
Take care of yourself.
It’s important to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. This means eating healthy, getting enough exercise, and getting enough sleep.
When you’re taking care of yourself, you’re better able to handle stress and stay positive.
You feel recharged when you take care of your self and you will show up better at work and your personal life.
Find hobbies outside of work.
It’s important to have hobbies outside of work to help you relax and de-stress. Hobbies can also help you meet new people and make friends. When you have a life outside of work, it’s easier to come back to work refreshed and motivated.
I try to include my family in my hobbies and be involved with my kids’ hobbies as well. I get to spend time with them and we bond better.
With these simple tips, having a simple work-life and personal-life balance is going far. Simple routines with your personal life are much better than burning out to get an income goal and losing your health and your relationships in return.
